Most stackers can accommodate the lifting of extreme weights to around 5 tons with either the gas or electric machines. They are physically less demanding to maneuver than the labor-intensive versions thanks to the hydraulic power that hoists and lowers the forks. These models are steered by turning the handle in a particular direction. There is a button on the knob that functions to hoist and lower the forks. A throttle found on the stacker's grips moves the appliance forward and in reverse. This type of equipment is commonly known as a forklift and is used from a sit-down posture.

Selecting the correct model of pallet jack may be somewhat critical as machines will have varying lift functionality, together with varying fork widths. Some models of jacks might only permit two pallets to be loaded at one time, while other versions may be capable to load multiple pallets. Some versions of these hoists include an adaptable fork so as to permit the jack to slide beneath pallets of atypical sizes and shapes.
